PALACE OF DIAMONDS OF FERRARA

The Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara is a jewel located exactly in the center of Corso Ercole I D'Este. Now home of the Pinacoteca Nazionale of Ferrara, and exhibition pavilion for temporary exhibitions, both itinerant and specially designed for the magnificent palace, it was founded in 1492.

The building was designed by the magnificent architect Biagio Rossetti, creator of the plan of the city of Ferrara as we know it today, and its external appearance gives it the name of Palazzo dei Diamanti, Palace of the Diamonds, as it consists of ashlar in the shape of diamonds. Precisely we are not aware of the number of diamonds present on all the facades of the building, but it is estimated that it is between 8,500 and 12,000.

Legend has it that a real diamond was hidden inside one of the tips of the decorative diamonds, at the behest of Ercole I D'Este, the Duke of Ferrara at the time. No one has ever found the aforementioned diamond and, even, it is said that the Duke had cut out the tongue of  the master builder who took care of the construction of the building, and blinded him, to ensure that no one ever discovered the true location, as the master builder was the only one who knew the location of the precious stone, together with the Duke. Ercole I D'Este, to repay the wrong suffered by the master builder, rewarded his family with gold coins.
